New Years.
I don't like most holidays. They are usually very exclusive, they leave some people out. Valentine's Day is despised by the lonely and single. Its a day for married men to buy flowers and candy and get that special thing he likes after dinner. Fourth of July is only celebrated by Americans and anyone else that wants to get wasted. Halloween is for kids and women who want to dress like slutty witches, nurses, Freddy Krueger or Harry Potter. Thanksgiving is slowly becoming Pre-Christmas. Christmas is a day for people to dig themselves deeper in debt. Not to mention it isn't for you if you are Jewish, Muslim or Jehovah's Witness.
New Years is more my speed. Everyone celebrates it. It is our only true global holiday that the corporations outside of the networks haven't abused. Fireworks and alcohol...How could you not like that? It's adult and childlike at the same time. We drink champagne but count down the Times Square Apple like a crack head counting the change in your pocket.
Crackhead: Let me get twenty dollars?
Me: All I have is change.
(Pats pocket to hear the jingle)
Crackhead: That sounds like fifty-six cents
Me: Wait what?
The reason why I love New Years is because at the center it is about pure optimism. It is a day we promise to be better people. We create goals and try to live up to the vision of who we think we are. It doesn't matter if we accomplish the goals or not. We try. That is at the heart of what it means to be human.
This is my new beginning. A blog to get my thoughts out there and exercise my writing muscle. This will be a place of truth. It will not be politically correct. No one is politically correct in their own thoughts. Nothing is taboo. Nothing is off the table. Everything is permitted. It is about to go down and I can't wait. 2012 rest in peace, all hail 2013. It's my new beginning.
